Breast Reconstruction
Breast reconstruction restores breast shape after mastectomy or other breast surgery. This can be achieved using implants, but the ‘gold standard’ is using the patient’s own tissue.
The Procedure
Often several hours; microsurgical reconstruction may take around 6 hours or longer
General anaesthetic
Hospital Stay
Typically 2-3 days. Recovery varies according to reconstructive method. Microsurgical reconstruction involves both breast and donor-site recovery, but the inpatient stay is usually not more than 2 nights with our enhanced recovery programme.
Drains
Usually yes
Recovery
Recovery varies substantially according to reconstructive method. Microsurgical reconstruction involves both breast and donor-site recovery and generally requires a longer hospital stay and recovery than implant-only surgery.
Time Off Work
Often around 6 weeks, depending on technique and occupation
Driving
Up to 4 weeks depending on technique
Procedure Details
Breast reconstruction is highly individual. Options depend on cancer treatment, previous surgery or radiotherapy, body anatomy, general health and personal priorities. Reconstruction may be immediate or delayed and may involve implants, autologous tissue or a combination.
Reconstruction may use an implant or tissue transferred from another part of the body, including microsurgical free-flap techniques. The most appropriate method and timing are discussed as part of multidisciplinary cancer and reconstructive planning.
