Reconstruction After Skin Cancer
Reconstruction after skin-cancer removal aims to restore form and function while respecting the requirements of complete cancer treatment.
The Procedure
Approximately 1–3 hours for many cases; complex reconstruction may take longer
Local or general anaesthetic depending on defect size, site and reconstructive technique
Hospital Stay
Day case or overnight depending on complexity
Drains
May be required for larger flap procedures
Recovery
Recovery varies with the size and reconstructive technique. Grafts and flaps require specific wound care and monitoring.
Time Off Work
Approximately 1–2 weeks for many cases; site and complexity dependent
Driving
When safe, comfortable and able to perform an emergency stop; timing varies by site
Procedure Details
Skin-cancer defects vary greatly in size and location. Reconstruction is planned after or alongside appropriate tumour removal, with technique selected according to the defect, surrounding tissue and functional and cosmetic priorities.
Options can include direct closure, local flaps or skin grafts. More complex defects may require staged or specialist reconstruction.
Follow up
Wound/dressing review at 7-10 days; surgeon review at around 4-8 weeks.
